Healing Dualisms-Pro-life v. Pro-choice

My dualism that I’m studying in Pro-life versus pro-choice. By having this dualism the pro-choice side may feel guilt in having an abortion by the pro-life side because they have killed a fetus. The pro-life side may feel guilt from birthing an unwanted child and having society take care of it. The society would have to create services. If the dualism were eliminated then women on either side would no longer feel guilt.

To eat or no to eat or eat in moderation? To drive or fly or take the train? Black or white or shads of gray? Pro-life or Pro-choice, but isn’t that just shades of gray too?

We are the ones who have the power to change! Stand up for yourself and reject dualisms.

I had never heard of the word erotic used the way the article Uses of the erotic: the erotic as power used it. Lorde states that erotic can be used to describe a women’s power. It could also mean that a person is highly motivated or living from the heart. It’s an untapped source of energy than many women do not know about. It’s been downgraded and abused. Its used to keep women oppressed. Men have renamed it. It’s been downgraded to pornography and sexual activity. Society encourages mediocrity and that’s why we don’t see it as much. By learning this new definition of this word erotic, my classmate and I have decided to re-write the definition. So check back to Wikipidea.com soon.

In the article Bringing Feminism a la Casa, Daisy Hernandez writes about breaking down boundaries and not taking “no” as an answer. She is saying that women need to stand up for their rights. In another article titled Talking Back, author Bell Hooks was always told that is was not a girls place to have such opinions. Even though her mother did not want to see her expressing herself, she did anyway. She kept journals of all her thought process. This is what the whole world should be doing. Never stay silent because someone wants you to be. You have a voice, a pen, a hand or if you’re a painter or a photographer then use your creativity to send the word out that women will no longer be treated with disrespect. And this is how we will move forward from sexism.

Violence against Women

This is a major topic now that women are becoming more powerful in the world. They are able to control their own lives and live without men. In the last 20-30 years women’s rights have expanded! But still with all that women are being batted, abused and killed everyday!! In an article by Jennifer DiMarco she write about being sexually abused. I think that’s the worst thing a man can do to a woman. I think men who abuse women should be castrated! No woman or girl deserves that kind of treatment.

In the article “Ending Violence” it talks about how violence is a learned behavior. I believe it because all behaviors are learned, unless you are really creative. They also talk about how feminist want to end all violence, not just against women. I try to lead an example of non-violence everyday. I suggest when people get upset to breath and think that it’s not a big deal. It’s hard but if we all behave with out harming others, we will be fine.

The last article “History and the Politics of violence against women” By Antonia I. Castasiteda, gives some crazy statistics about violence against women. 1 in 3 women will be raped in their lifetime. That is insane! No one should be raped! What is this world coming to where women are afraid to leave their house? No they can’t even be safe there! In conclusion, I’m going to take a lot of self-defense classes.

I just wrote a 3-page essay on this topic. I felt like I was being a true and tough feminist. Women don’t have control over their bodies. Women like Barbara Bush and Jane Fonda have such a capability to show by example how to control your own body. I think that some people that cut themselves out of society, like the Amish people or other religious groups, are not influenced by our society because they are not exposed to it. But if you study their culture you will see that they dress the same and some similar mannerisms and their own cultural norms.

I was with my mother this weekend and I was just observing her ways and she spent 30 minutes trying to figure out what necklace to wear. I think that she does care about how she feels and how others see her. She wants to feel attractive and wants to attract others, specially her husband (my dad). She is aging and she looks more beautiful everyday. She never stops doing things cause in her life there are a million things that must be done and she wants to do. To me she is a women that conforms but tries not to let is control her life.

Women have been used and abused through out time. In the article “Morality and Personhood: A Feminist Perspective” by Rosalind Pollack Petchesky, she states that women have had to fight for their right to “selfhood”. Petchesky goes on to discuss issues of abortion. She gives a nice history of abortion in America and the world. One idea I liked and forgot I knew was during times when the church was “the power” the patriarchal law valued fetus’s the same as a slave or a child or a women. I really believe that religion has controlled and messed up people’s lives. I don’t want to go on a religion rant but I feel strongly about how corrupt religious institutions are. They brainwash people into thinking that there is this higher power and the powerful church people are able to communicate with the people in the sky. Anyways, Petchesky talks about the ideas of personhood- meaning being alive and morality- ethics. She says that literature today says that people think morality doesn’t change over time or that it doesn’t change from culture to culture. Now that is just an ignorant thought, of course everyone has different thought processes through out the world.
The other articles that were discussed this week in Women’s Studies included some big ideas like how women’s bodies have always been medicalized. Women are the ones to have the birth control, why can’t men be on birth control. I know, because women have no trust in the men. When having a baby in the US, women often have no control over their way of delivering the baby. Once the doctor says they are going to do it their way, that’s it!
I really women did to stand up and fight for their rights always! Never be a push over! Something is going to change SOON!

Woman’s Bodies

Women through out history have not been treated well because they were female, because they were somewhat different! Really? How different? Even Aristole though of women to be a “misbegotten man” and a “monstrosity”. Men just saw us as a way to reproduce and pleasure themselves. Still to this day men have this idea that they control women. That they have the power to do, as they want. In the article “A History of Women’s Bodies” by Rose Weitz, the whole article is a huge belittlement to women. We have had to fight for our rights as humans.

What I don’t understand is why men treated and still treat us horrible when we are part of the equation to continuing the human species? What started this hatred and belittlement of women? Charles Darwin thought that males were more evolved than females. And he was a scientist, where did he get his data. I do believe, just like the article, that the ideas of women are socially constructed and it is possible to change these ideas over time. I hope one day that every woman in the world will be free of belittlement!
